cancun marriage proposal photographer

CANCÚN · PLAYA DEL CARMEN · TULUM · AKUMAL · COSTA MUJERES
You planned the question. Now you need someone to capture the answer — without her knowing anyone is there.
We are Luis & Génessis, destination wedding photographers based in Cancún with over 250 weddings documented across the Riviera Maya since 2018. Marriage proposals are something we photograph with the same care as a wedding day — because for most couples, this is where the story actually begins.
Whether you are planning a surprise proposal on a private beach in Playa del Carmen, a sunset moment in Tulum, or a dramatic underwater reveal in a cenote near Akumal, we know every location, every light condition, and exactly how to disappear into the background so the moment stays completely real.
How it works — the setup that makes it look natural.
The most common question we get is: how do I get her there without ruining the surprise?
The answer is simple and it works every time. Tell your partner you booked a couples photoshoot — a romantic session on the beach or at a cenote. She gets to dress up, do her nails, feel ready. We show up as the photographers for a normal session, spend a few minutes making both of you comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera — and then, at exactly the right moment, we give you the signal.
She never sees it coming. The photos tell the whole story.

How it works on the day.

We start as a normal couple session.
Tell your partner you booked a surprise couples photoshoot as a gift for the trip. She gets to dress up, feel ready, and enjoy a genuine romantic session.
We will spend the first few minutes photographing you both naturally — no pressure, no hints.
We pick you both up.
All packages include transportation from your hotel to the location and back — beach, cenote, or wherever you have chosen.
Most resorts charge a vendor fee for photographers to work inside the property, so we handle the logistics from pickup to drop-off.
The moment.
At the right time, Luis asks her to look at the camera for a specific shot — and asks her to hold that position for a moment.
That is your signal. You take out the ring, get down on one knee, and when she turns around — the question is already happening. We have every angle covered.
You celebrate — we keep shooting.
After the proposal, we continue with portraits as a newly engaged couple.
The emotion is still completely fresh, completely unguarded, and these are consistently the most real images from the entire session.
Note: If your package includes video, we tell your partner we are conducting a lifestyle video experiment with couples and that we will gift you the film as part of the session. She never suspects a thing — and the reaction on camera is completely real.
FAQ
What do I tell my partner so she doesn't suspect anything?
Tell her you booked a surprise couples photoshoot as a gift for the trip — a romantic session on the beach or at a cenote.
This gives her a real reason to dress up, do her nails, and feel ready. The session starts exactly like a normal couple shoot, and the proposal happens naturally within it. This approach works every time and produces the most genuine reactions we have ever photographed.
Will my partner suspect the filmmaker is there for a proposal?
No. If your package includes video, we tell your partner we are conducting a lifestyle video experiment with couples and gifting you the film as part of the session. She has no reason to question it — and her reaction on camera is completely unscripted.
Do you pick us up at the hotel?
Yes. All packages include transportation from your hotel to the location and back. Most resorts charge a vendor fee for outside photographers to work inside the property, so we handle everything from pickup to drop-off — no logistics for you to manage on the day.
Can you suggest the best location for my proposal?
Yes — and we encourage you to ask. After 250+ weddings and dozens of proposals across Cancún, Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Akumal since 2018, we know which beaches are semi-private, which cenotes produce the best light, and which locations photograph best at each hour of the day.
Tell us your resort and what your partner loves — we will recommend the exact spot.
Do you only photograph the proposal moment, or the whole session?
Every package includes coverage before and after the proposal — the walk to the location, the buildup, the moment itself, and the celebration immediately after.
The Diamond package also includes a full underwater cenote session following the proposal, giving you two completely different sets of images from the same day.
What happens if it rains?
Brief afternoon rain is common in the Riviera Maya and rarely ruins a session — it usually passes quickly and often leaves the most dramatic light of the day. If weather presents a genuine problem, we reschedule at no additional charge.
What is the booking and payment process?
A 30% deposit confirms your date and blocks it exclusively for you. The remaining 70% is due on the day of the session.
When do I receive the photos and video?
A preview of 5 to 10 edited images is delivered the same day or the day after.
The full edited gallery arrives within 3 to 5 weeks in a private password-protected online gallery with high-resolution download. If your package includes a cinematic film, it is delivered a couple of weeks after the photos.

The best locations for a marriage proposal in cancun and Riviera Maya.

riviera maya proposals
Cancun offer some of the most dramatic sunset backdrops in all of Mexico — turquoise water, white sand, and golden hour light that arrives right on schedule.
We know the best semi-private beach access points along this corridor and can recommend the exact spot and time based on your resort and the look you have in mind.
cancun proposals
The cenotes of the Riviera Maya are unlike anything else on earth — crystal-clear freshwater pools carved into the jungle, lit from above by shafts of natural light.
A proposal inside a cenote is one of the most visually dramatic setups we photograph. The Diamond package includes a beach proposal followed by an underwater photoshoot at a cenote near your location — two completely different settings, one continuous story.
tulum proposals
Tulum offers the most diverse backdrop options of any area in the Riviera Maya — jungle venues, beachfront palapas, cenotes, and bohemian beach clubs with a visual identity unlike anything in Cancún or Playa del Carmen.
If your partner has a specific aesthetic in mind, Tulum almost certainly has the location to match it.
Everything you need to know before planning your proposal in Cancún.
Planning a surprise proposal from the US or Canada while your partner has no idea is one of the most logistically interesting things we help with. Here is everything we have learned from dozens of proposals across this coast.

The vendor fee — what it means for your proposal.

Most resorts in Cancún, Costa Mujeres, and Riviera Maya charge an outside vendor fee for photographers to work inside the property. This means that if you want us to photograph your proposal at your resort — at the pool, the beach, your room terrace — there will be a fee that you negotiate directly with the hotel.
The easiest solution, and the one most of our clients choose: we pick you both up at the hotel and drive to a semi-private beach or cenote location nearby. No vendor fee, complete privacy, and usually a significantly more photogenic setting than anything inside the resort.
If you want the proposal to happen at your specific resort, reach out and we can advise you on how the vendor fee process works at your property — we know most of the major venues in the area well.

The best time of day for a proposal in Cancún.

There are actually two golden hours — and both are worth considering.
Sunset is the most popular for a reason. The light turns warm, directional, and cinematic in a way that no other hour produces. The turquoise water catches the color of the sky, the sand glows, and even the most camera-shy couple looks extraordinary. The one downside: Cancún and Riviera Maya beaches get busy in the late afternoon, which means other guests in the background of your photos.
Sunrise is the option most couples never consider — and the one we love recommending. In this area, the sun rises directly from the ocean, which means the light hits the water at the most dramatic possible angle. The beach is completely empty. No strangers, no resort guests, no distractions — just the two of you and the Caribbean. The light window is shorter than at sunset, but the privacy and the setting are unmatched. Another benefit of this, is that you have the remaining hours of the day to have fun and visit the area or relax and enjoy your resort.
The honest tradeoff: sunrise requires an early start, and for most women that means waking up even earlier to get ready. It takes more planning. But every couple who has done it has told us it was completely worth it.
We plan every proposal around whichever window works best for you. Tell us your date and your resort — we will give you the exact time to aim for and help you decide which option fits your situation.
Best locations for a surprise proposal in Cancún & Riviera Maya.
After dozens of proposals across this coast, here are the locations we recommend most consistently:

a beach in cancun

cancun
one of the most iconic public beaches in Cancún's hotel zone are Gaviota Azul (forum) or Playa Delfines. Both open, dramatic, with an unobstructed ocean view and no resort restrictions. Works especially well at golden hour when the light hits the water directly.

Costa Mujeres beaches

costa mujeres
Quieter and more private than the hotel zone, with some of the most turquoise water in the entire area. Ideal for proposals that need semi-privacy without the logistics of a cenote.
This is a different quest, since I only know one "access" where we need to walk a little bit on the jungle.

PLaya norte

isla mujeres
A 20-minute ferry from Cancún but a world apart in atmosphere. Colorful streets, dramatic cliffs at Punta Sur, and quiet beaches on the Caribbean side. One of our most requested proposal locations for couples who want something that feels completely different from a resort.

cenotes

riviera maya
The freshwater cenotes between Playa del Carmen and Tulum produce some of the most visually extraordinary images we have ever made. Crystal-clear water, shafts of natural light from above, and complete privacy. A beach proposal followed by an underwater cenote session is a combination no resort in the world can replicate.

a beach playa del carmen or tulum

playa del carmen
There are many options for this in all riviera Maya area and Tulum. Depending on where you are staying I usually will pick you up and take you to a beautiful beach near the area.

When is the best time of year to propose in Cancún?

December through April is the best window — dry season, stable weather, consistent sunshine, and beaches free of sargassum seaweed. The light during this period is warm and reliable, and the ocean stays a deep, clear turquoise.
From mid-April through September, sargassum begins arriving on the Caribbean coast and affects the appearance of some beaches — particularly on the open ocean side. This does not mean a proposal is impossible, just that location selection becomes more important. We will advise you on which beaches are clear based on current conditions.
October and November bring the highest rainfall of the year. Proposals still happen and often produce dramatic, moody light — but flexibility on timing is important.

How to keep the surprise when you are staying at the same resort.

This is the detail most people overthink — and the solution is simpler than you think.
Tell your partner you booked a surprise couples photoshoot as a gift for the trip. Or that you recieved a gift in exchange of attending a breakfast from the resort sales team (timeshare). This is genuinely exciting on its own. She will want to dress up, feel ready, and look her best for the occasion. It removes all suspicion and actually adds to the anticipation of the day.
We pick you both up at the hotel lobby. From that moment, the session runs exactly like a normal couples shoot — walking to the location, a few natural portraits, laughing, relaxing. When the moment is right, we give you the signal. She has no idea what is coming.
The reactions we capture using this method are completely unscripted — because to her, nothing extraordinary has happened yet. And then everything does.

Cancún proposal ideas — for every kind of couple.

The classic beach sunset
walk to a semi-private stretch of beach at golden hour, a simple setup, and the Caribbean as your backdrop. Works for every aesthetic and never gets old.
The cenote reveal
proposal on the beach followed by an underwater photoshoot at a freshwater cenote. Two completely different settings, one continuous story. Available in the Diamond package.
The island escape
ferry to Isla Mujeres for a sunset proposal on the cliffs at Punta Sur or a quiet Caribbean beach. One of the most visually distinctive settings on this coast.
The private beach club
venues like Blue Venado or private beach access near Playa del Carmen offer a completely exclusive setting with no strangers in the background and no restrictions on how late you celebrate.
