What kind of session are you looking for?

Not every couple wants the same thing — and not every session looks the same. Here is a quick guide to help you find the right experience before you even look at pricing.

Beach session

The classic Caribbean setting. White sand, turquoise water, golden hour light. Works for any couple, any style. Ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries, and vacation portraits. The most requested session in the Cancún and Riviera Maya area.

Cenote session

A completely different visual experience. Crystal-clear freshwater pools carved into the Yucatán jungle, lit from above by shafts of natural light. Above-water portraits plus underwater photography in the same session. Unlike anything you can photograph anywhere else in the world.

Beach + Cenote

Both in one day. Two completely different settings, two completely different moods, one continuous experience. The most complete option if you want to make the most of everything the Riviera Maya offers.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PLANNING A COUPLE PHOTOSHOOT IN CANCÚN, RIVIERA MAYA OR TULUM.

Planning a photo session from the US or Canada while you are still figuring out dates, locations, and logistics can feel overwhelming — especially when you are trying to coordinate it around a vacation, a honeymoon, or a trip with a tight schedule. Here is everything we have learned from dozens of sessions across this coast that will make the whole process simple.

The best time of year for a photoshoot in the Riviera Maya — a practical guide.

December through April — peak season.

Dry season. Stable weather, low humidity, consistent sunshine, and beaches completely free of sargassum. The water is at its clearest and most turquoise. Golden hour light during this period is warm and reliable. This is when the Riviera Maya looks exactly like the photos that made you want to come here.

May through August — shoulder season.

Warmer temperatures and higher humidity, with occasional afternoon showers. The sargassum situation on some open beaches varies — some days clear, some days not. Cenote sessions are completely unaffected by sargassum and are an excellent alternative during this period. Sunrise sessions are especially strong in this window — the beach is empty and the light is soft before the heat arrives.

September through November — rainy season.

The highest rainfall of the year — particularly September and October. Sessions still happen and produce some of the most dramatic light of the entire year. Cenotes are largely unaffected by weather. Flexibility on timing is important, and we will always advise honestly about conditions on your specific dates.

The best time of day for a couple photoshoot in Cancún and Tulum.

This is the single most important decision you will make for your session — more important than location, more important than outfits. The hour you choose changes everything.

riviera maya marriage proposal photographer

Sunrise — the empty beach option.

The most popular option for a reason. Approximately 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, the Caribbean light turns warm, directional, and cinematic. The turquoise water catches the color of the sky. The sand glows. Even the most camera-shy couple looks extraordinary.

The one consideration: beaches in the Cancún hotel zone and Playa del Carmen get busy in the late afternoon. If you want more privacy, we know the semi-private beach access points that most tourists never find — and we choose the location specifically around your session time.

Couple holding hands walking on beach at sunset, wearing white outfits, smiling at each other with ocean waves behind them.

Sunset — the golden hour.

In this area, the sun rises directly from the ocean — which means the light hits the water head-on at the most dramatic angle of the day. And the beach is completely empty. No strangers, no resort guests, no one in the background of your photos. Just the two of you and the Caribbean Sea.

The tradeoff is honest: sunrise requires an early start — typically 5:30 to 6:30am depending on the season. For most couples, that means getting up and getting ready before 5am. It takes planning. But every couple who has done it has told us it was the right choice. You also have the entire rest of the day to enjoy your resort, your vacation, and the photos you will not stop looking at.

Cenote sessions — the timing is different.

Cenotes are lit by natural shafts of light that enter through the jungle above. The light inside a cenote is extraordinary throughout most of the day — but the specific quality of the beams changes with the sun position.

We schedule cenote sessions based on which cenote we are using and the angle of light at that specific location.

We handle all of this planning — you just show up.

The best locations for a couple photoshoot in Cancún, Riviera Maya & Tulum.

After dozens of proposals across this coast, here are the locations we recommend most consistently:

a beach in cancun

cancun

The Cancún hotel zone stretches 14 miles along the Caribbean coast, but not every stretch photographs the same. Playa Delfines is one of the most visually open beaches in the area — no resort structures in the background, just the ocean and the sky.

The beaches near the northern hotel zone are more secluded and less busy. We know where to go based on the time of day, the season, and the look you have in mind.

Romantic beach session for couples in Costa Mujeres — Luis Tovilla

Costa Mujeres beaches

costa mujeres

Just north of the hotel zone, Costa Mujeres has some of the most turquoise and clear water in the entire area — and significantly fewer people. We know a specific access point that requires a short walk through the jungle and delivers a completely private beach.

One of our most consistently recommended locations for couples who want privacy and extraordinary water color.

playa norte

isla mujeres

A 20-minute ferry from Cancún and a completely different world. The beaches on the Caribbean side of Isla Mujeres — particularly Playa Norte — have a stillness and clarity that is hard to find anywhere on the mainland.

The colorful streets and dramatic cliffs at Punta Sur add visual variety that no hotel zone beach can offer. For couples who want something that feels genuinely unique, Isla Mujeres is consistently one of our top recommendations.

a beach in Playa del Carmen.

riviera maya

The beaches north of Playa del Carmen — away from the main Fifth Avenue tourist corridor — offer a more relaxed, less crowded setting with the same Caribbean water quality.

For cenote sessions, the area between Playa del Carmen and Akumal has the highest concentration of accessible, beautiful cenotes in the entire Riviera Maya corridor.

Tulum beach couple photoshoot

a beach in Tulum

riviera maya

A cenote is a natural freshwater pool formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, exposing groundwater beneath. The Yucatán Peninsula has thousands of them — and they are unlike anything else in the world for photography.

We can do a regular photoshoot at a cenote or an underwater one if you would like to, this are an incredible photoshoot type that is completely different from anything else.

tulum

Tulum offers the most visually diverse backdrop options of anywhere on this coast. The bohemian beach clubs with their thatched palapas and lush tropical vegetation. The jungle-edge areas north and south of town.

The cenotes — Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos, and others — which are among the most photogenic underwater environments on earth. For couples who want a visual identity that is completely different from a standard resort beach session, Tulum consistently delivers.

The vendor fee — what it means for your photoshoot.

Sunset couple photoshoot, bride showing ring after a marriage proposal photoshoot at the beach

Most resorts in Cancún, Costa Mujeres, and the Riviera Maya charge an outside vendor fee for photographers to work inside the property. For couple sessions, this creates a practical decision worth understanding before you book.

The option most couples choose: We pick you up at the hotel lobby and take you to one of our favorite private beach locations or cenotes nearby. No vendor fee, complete privacy, and almost always a significantly more photogenic setting than anything the resort itself offers. The turquoise water outside the resort corridor is often clearer, the beaches less crowded, and the visual variety far greater. This is our default recommendation — and the results consistently speak for themselves.

If you want to stay at your resort: Some couples prefer to keep the session entirely on property — particularly if they are staying somewhere with extraordinary architecture, gardens, or a setting that is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. In that case, the vendor fee is negotiated directly with your hotel — not something we manage, but something we guide you through completely. Fees typically range from $150 to $400 USD or more depending on the property. We know the process at most major venues in the area and will tell you exactly what to expect at your specific resort.

A middle option that sometimes works well: Some resorts have a public access to beach near, when that happens, we park outside the hotel and meet you at the beach. This usually happens in Cancun and Playa del carmen. Some zones like Riviera Maya, Costa Mujeres or Some parts of Tulum doesn't have a public access to beach and we need to access thru the resort, that means they will charge the fee.

Not sure which approach makes the most sense for your specific resort and dates? Reach out and we will give you an honest recommendation based on where you are staying.

What to wear for your couple beach photoshoot in Cancún area.

This is the question we get asked most often — and the answer changes depending on the location and the look you are going for. Here is what we have learned from dozens of sessions on this coast.

For beach sessions.

Light, solid colors work best against the Caribbean palette — whites, creams, soft blues, blush, sage. These tones photograph beautifully against turquoise water and white sand without competing with the landscape. Flowy fabrics move naturally in the ocean breeze and create movement in photos that stiff or heavy fabrics cannot.

Avoid dark colors, heavy blacks, and busy patterns — they draw attention away from your faces and create harsh contrast against the bright beach environment. Avoid very short hemlines if you want to move freely without thinking about it constantly.

For the groom or partner: linen pants and a light-colored shirt is consistently the best choice — lightweight, stylish, and practical in the Caribbean heat.

Bring a second outfit. If you are doing a 1-hour session, one outfit works perfectly. For longer sessions or multi-location shoots, a change of clothes opens up more visual variety and gives you two completely different looks in your gallery.

For cenote sessions.

You will be in the water — so plan accordingly. A flowing dress or skirt that moves beautifully underwater is ideal for the above-water and underwater portions. White or light colors look extraordinary in cenote water. For the underwater section specifically, the more the fabric floats and flows, the more dramatic the images. We can recommend specific styles that photograph best based on the cenote we are using.

Avoid anything too tight that restricts movement in the water. Avoid heavy fabrics that sink rather than float. Leave the high heels at the resort.

One universal rule: wear what feels like you.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. We have seen extraordinary sessions in simple swimwear and sessions in formal gowns. The outfit matters far less than you think — what matters is that you are relaxed and present. We handle the rest.

What happens during your session — from pickup to delivery.

cenote couple photoshoot, couple walking in the jungle while they look each other and laugh - Luis Tovilla Wedding Photographer

We pick you up at your hotel.

All sessions include roundtrip transportation from your hotel to the location and back. Most resorts charge an external vendor fee for photographers to work inside the property — which is why we bring you out. This also means you get access to the best locations in the area rather than being limited to what your resort offers.

We start naturally — no posing, no direction that feels forced.

The first few minutes of any session are always the same: we walk to the location, we talk, we let you relax. We give you something to do — walk this way, look at the water, tell each other something. And then we step back and document what happens between you. The images that come from those first unguarded minutes are consistently the most natural in the entire gallery.

You receive your photos faster than you expect.

We deliver a preview of edited images the same day or within 24 hours. Your complete edited gallery — 50 to 100+ fully edited photos depending on your session — is delivered within 2 to 3 weeks in a private password-protected online gallery with high-resolution download.

Questions & Answers

01.

Can we do the session at our resort?

Most resorts charge an outside vendor fee for photographers to work inside the property — similar to weddings. If you want us to photograph at your specific resort, you would negotiate this fee directly with the hotel. We can advise you on the process at your specific property. In most cases, we recommend bringing you out to a private beach or cenote location instead — you get better settings, complete privacy, and no vendor fee to navigate. The results are consistently superior to anything we could create inside a resort.

02.

We are not photogenic and feel awkward in photos. Will it show?

This is what almost every couple tells us before their session — and what they forget about within the first ten minutes. We do not pose couples into positions that feel foreign. We create a natural environment, give you real things to do and react to, and document what happens between you. The couples who were most self-conscious going in consistently produce the most natural, real images from their entire trip.

03.

Do we need swimming experience for the underwater cenote session?

Yes — and we want to be upfront about this. Swimming underwater with clothing is genuinely more challenging than swimming in a swimsuit. The fabric adds resistance and weight, and holding a natural, relaxed position underwater requires comfort in the water. Both people in the session need a solid intermediate-to-advanced level of swimming — comfortable submerging fully, opening their eyes underwater, and staying calm below the surface for short periods.

This is not a session for beginners or people who are uncomfortable in water. If either of you has any doubts about your swimming ability, the above-water cenote portraits — which require no submersion at all — are a beautiful alternative that still captures the extraordinary light and setting of the cenote without the underwater component.

Not sure if you qualify? Tell us your comfort level in the water and we will give you an honest recommendation before you book.

04.

What is included in the cenote entrance fee? where do we pay this?

Cenotes in the Riviera Maya are managed by local communities or private owners and charge a separate entrance fee — typically between $20 and $40 USD per person. This fee is not included in our session price and is paid directly at the location. We will tell you the exact amount before your session so there are no surprises.

01.

When is the best time of year for a photoshoot in Cancún or Tulum?

December through April is the best window — dry season, consistent sunshine, and beaches free of sargassum seaweed. The water is at its most turquoise and clear during this period. From mid-April, sargassum begins arriving on some open beaches and stays through September — though cenotes and sheltered bays are not affected. Cenote sessions are excellent year-round regardless of season.

02.

Can we book a session even if we are not on our honeymoon?

Yes — completely. We document couples at every stage. Honeymoons, anniversaries, engagements, vacations, birthday trips, or simply two people who want beautiful photos of themselves in one of the most extraordinary places in the world. There is no wrong reason to book a session here.

03.

What is the deposit and payment process?

A 30% deposit secures your date. The remaining 70% is due on the day of the session. We use a secure client management platform for contracts, invoicing, and payment — everything handled digitally before you arrive.

04.

What happens if it rains?

Brief afternoon showers are common in the Caribbean and rarely ruin a session. If heavy or continuous rain prevents us from shooting, we reschedule for the next available date during your trip. Cenote sessions are particularly rain-resilient — the cenote environment is unaffected by surface weather and often produces even more dramatic light during overcast conditions.
