Vanessa and Noah flew in from the United Kingdom for this. A surprise marriage proposal in Cancún — planned entirely in secret, coordinated only with Noah, and executed on one of the most challenging weeks of the year on the Caribbean coast.
They arrived during peak sargassum season. And the beach in front of their hotel in Playa del Carmen was not in condition for the session we had planned.
So we changed the plan.
The sargassum challenge — and how we solved it.
Late spring and early summer on the Caribbean coast of Mexico brings sargassum — a natural seaweed that arrives on the open ocean side of the coastline and affects beaches differently depending on their geography. Playa del Carmen is one of the areas most consistently affected during this period.
When Noah reached out and the timing was confirmed, we assessed conditions immediately. The beach at their hotel was not going to work. But we know this coastline well enough to know exactly where to go when one area is affected — a specific stretch of beach in the Cancún hotel zone that sits in a more protected position and stays significantly cleaner even during heavy sargassum weeks.
The solution: we picked them up in Playa del Carmen early in the morning, drove them to Cancún, and had them on a clean beach before the sun had fully risen. Transportation for both of them, door to door — included in the session, no extra logistics for Noah to manage while also keeping a proposal secret from the person sitting next to him in the car.
The session — and a ring hidden in a backpack.
Vanessa thought she was there for a couples photoshoot — a sunrise session as a gift during their trip. She had no idea Noah had been planning this for months.
We started the session naturally. Walking along the beach, some portraits together, the two of them relaxing into the morning. Vanessa forgot about the camera within the first few minutes — which is exactly when the real work begins.

After the proposal — the session continued.
We kept shooting after the proposal — still on the same beach, the emotion still raw and completely unguarded. Newly engaged couples produce some of the most natural and powerful images of any session we document. The self-consciousness is entirely gone. What you see in these photos is exactly what was happening.
When the session ended, we drove them back to Playa del Carmen. They arrived at their hotel as a newly engaged couple, with a clean gallery and a morning neither of them will ever forget.
